Tottenham Hotspur manager Graham Potter has been mentioned as a possible candidate for the club’s next manager.
The UK’s ‘Football Fancast’ reported on April 28 (KST), “Tottenham continue to search for their next manager. Porter has emerged as a new candidate. Roberto De Zerbi, who succeeded Potters as Brighton manager, is also on the shortlist but is unlikely to take the job as Spurs will not qualify for European competition next season.”
Tottenham sacked Antonio Conte midway through last season. The club rebounded to qualify for the UEFA Champions League (UCL). As a result, Tottenham has made a major reinforcement this season with high expectations. They’ve brought in a number of new players, including the likes of Eric Dier and Ivan Perisic. The idea was to give Conte a boost.
However, the start of the season was a disappointment. Conte eventually left the club at the end of March. Spurs then decided to go through the season with an interim manager instead of hiring a permanent one. Christian Stellini, who had worked as an assistant coach under Conte, was named acting head coach.
However, Stellini was sacked shortly afterward. A 1-6 loss to Newcastle United was the final straw. Spurs ended up with Ryan Mason in 스포츠토토 charge until the end of the season in an ‘acting manager’s acting manager’ system. In the meantime, Julian Nagelsmann and Mauricio Pochettino have been linked with the club, but negotiations have not gone well.
The most recent candidate was Feyenoord boss Arne Slott. The Dutchman, who has mostly worked in the Dutch game, led Feyenoord to the title this season. However, Slott recently re-signed with Feyenoord. The search for Tottenham’s next manager is back to square one.
In the meantime, there have been reports that Porter could be in the running for the Spurs job. Pochettino made a name for himself after taking charge of Brighton in 2019. Since then, he has surprised the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City, and Tottenham Hotspur.
He’s also been in good form at the start of this season with Brighton. He caused an upset in the opening round of the English Premier League (EPL) with a 2-1 win over Manchester United. By the sixth round, he had four wins, one draw, and one loss. He then received an offer from Chelsea and switched teams.
At Chelsea, he was disappointed. Things didn’t start off too badly for him. However, as time went on, he fell short of expectations. The beginning of 2023 was particularly bad. In the months of January and February, the club won just one of their 11 official matches.
Big investments didn’t work either. Chelsea spent around €300 million in the January transfer window to give Porter a boost. Enzo Fernandes, Mikhail Mourinho, Joao Felix, Benoit Badiazzil, and many others were added to the squad, but there was no rebound and he was eventually sacked.
“Porter had a successful career at Brighton before heading to Chelsea,” says Football Fancast. The Seagulls suffered fewer defeats in the league in 2021-22 than Liverpool, Man City and Chelsea, despite lacking club support. That could be attractive to Tottenham.”
Porter’s move to Spurs could be an interesting one. Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino is set to take over at Chelsea next season. It would be a Tottenham manager to Chelsea manager and a Chelsea manager to Tottenham manager.
